In February 1971 The British army 3rd Brigade took over the disused Jersey Kapwood factory at Kitchen Hill in the town. The army remained in the building until 1979. I note from research that this regiment served in the town. The factory which was built in 1958 by Pinehurst textiles was knocked down two years ago and is now a retail outlet. I would be very interested in hearing memories or seeing photographs of the town taken by soldiers who served here between 1971 and 1979. | Comments: | 30 Sqn 1975-1977 33sqn 1977-1979 then to willich for nine months didnt like it there so transfered to 9UDR in Antrim stayed with UDR for six months and came back to the corps in 1980 with 24 sqn. Midway thru 82 i was posted to the Training regiments where i taught in 1 and 3 regts.Was posted to 36 in Maidstone in 1985 and stayed their till i left the Army in 1988. Now live on st marys island in Chatham. Im married in with a 17 year old son. I am a director of a security company providing ccctv access control and fire alarms.I also organise 4 dinners per year for ex sappers living in the Medway towns. If any one out there wants to come to one of the dinners the next one is on the 24th of Auguast, just let me know and we will sort things out. |

This site info was passed onto me by JAG who resides in Germaqny but has come up to Norway to do some special valve builds for the company I work in here in Norway. I am now the Project QA manager for multi million subsea company - Framo Engineering I was known as MAC MQ or Sapper McQuiston Lelliott back in 74. I did the Derry and Portadown Ireland tours. I've been living in Norway since I disbanded in 83. After touring with 30 Filed in Portadown I was posted to 38 Berlin then onto AMFL Tidworth. I gave up the tharmy life as the civvy life had more money than me. 24 years later I'm a happy and content man. ( Still) Yep I remember the lads of 30 Fld Sqn. Dinzy and his team and many names that have gone into the hard drive of life. From Hohne then to Iserlen. Sorry my photo logs got destroyed many years ago by water damage in a cellar, sorry. | Comments: | Great sight Andy, I am Colin Bridgeman (taff) I was AAC Chepstow 1966 - 69, then onto southwood camp and then in 70 to 23 Engr Regt, 6 moths RP Staff, then 37 Sqdn, during that time Northern Ireland, was there when S/Sgt Mick Banks was shot, just before the cease fire, down the side of Mount Pontanger police station, a sad night, then back to Osnabruck and took up Regimental Chippy job, down in the cellar of HQ block, left in Dec 1972. but they were good days. |
